February 20, 2026

At least 33 people have been killed in an attack on Bui District in Arewa Local Government Area, Kebbi State, police have confirmed.

Spokesman Bashir Usman said suspected cattle rustlers, believed to be Lakurawa militants, carried out the assault after crossing into the area from Gudu Local Government Area in neighbouring Sokoto State.

“The Command, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, has deployed additional personnel and operational assets to the affected area,” Usman said. “Sustained patrols are underway to restore and maintain stability.”

Survivors described the attackers as highly organised, opening fire on civilians and triggering panic that forced many residents to flee their homes.

Police urged locals not to confront armed groups directly and to report suspicious movements through established security channels, warning that such confrontations carry serious risks.

Authorities say tracking and security operations are ongoing to secure the communities and prevent the assailants from escaping.
