The Enugwu-Ukwu, Anambra State indigene was officially recognised as the country’s overall best-performing UTME candidate during the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) maiden Academic Excellence Recognition Award Ceremony, held on June 30, 2026, at the Civic Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos.

At the ceremony, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, presented Chinedu with a ₦5 million Star Prize sponsored by Rite Foods Limited in recognition of his outstanding performance.

For Chinedu, the achievement was the culmination of months of focused preparation rather than chance. He attributed his success to disciplined study habits, consistency and the academic support he received at Achievers Academy, where he prepared for the examination. According to him, careful planning and sustained commitment enabled him to outperform millions of candidates across the country.

The recognition also marked the conclusion of a journey that briefly attracted public attention after discrepancies were discovered in his identity records. Following the resolution of the issue, JAMB officially confirmed him as the highest-scoring candidate in the 2025 UTME before honouring him at the national awards ceremony.

The aspiring Mechanical Engineering student selected the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as his first-choice institution and hopes to build a career in engineering.

Back home in Enugwu-Ukwu, particularly in Uruogbo Village, where his family hails from, Chinedu’s achievement has been celebrated as more than an individual accomplishment. For many residents, it reflects a tradition of academic excellence that spans generations.

His father, Arc. Chris Okeke, is remembered by former classmates as an exceptional student who graduated with distinction from St. Michael’s Secondary School, Nimo.

Among those celebrating Chinedu’s success is former Anambra State Commissioner for Information, C. Don Adinuba, who knew Chris Okeke during their days at St. Michael’s Secondary School.

According to Adinuba, Chris Okeke was two years ahead of him in school and belonged to the same class as renowned Nigerian writer and journalist, Okey Ndibe. He recalled that Chris distinguished himself academically and graduated with honours, making his son’s emergence as the nation’s top UTME candidate unsurprising.

Adinuba said the family’s academic accomplishments should also be credited to the educational foundation laid by St. Michael’s Secondary School, Nimo, which he described as one of the country’s outstanding centres of learning during its heyday.

He paid tribute to the school’s late principal, Chief Michael N. Enemuo of Etiti Nanka, crediting him with building a culture of discipline, scholarship and academic excellence that shaped generations of students.

For Adinuba, Chinedu’s achievement is more than the story of an exceptionally gifted student. It demonstrates how strong family values, quality education and disciplined preparation can combine to produce excellence worthy of national recognition.

As Nigeria continues to encourage merit and reward academic excellence, Chinedu Okeke’s journey offers a compelling reminder that remarkable achievements are often built over generations through dedicated teachers, supportive families and an enduring commitment to hard work.
