UNN Rotaractors, Others Plant 100 Trees In Campus

The Rotaract Club of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Rota-UNN) partnering with Rotary Club of Nsukka and others, planted 100 trees to support the environment.

This was done to mark the 50 years celebration of World Environment Day (WED) on 5th June, 2022.

WED is celebrated annually due to the outcome of United Nations’ conference on human environment.

Plogging Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting the United Nations sustainable development goals in Nigeria, also partnered with the project.

Mr. Ayodeji Omilabu, the principal plogga of Ploggin Nig. club of UNN in a discussion with Prime Business Africa reporter, said “The tree planting project is a continuous project and as an organisation, we carry out monitoring and evaluation from time to time on all the planted trees.”

He added that the continuous maintenance of the trees will be done by Plogging Nig. while other organisations involved are to do their checkups too. “They will call on us if anything happens to the trees” he further stated.

Rota-UNN’s president, Rtr. John Obiora Ifeanyichukwu, speaking on why they embarked on the project said,  “Supporting the environment is one of the Rotary area of focus. It is very necessary that we support the environment in one way or the other because we know how beneficial these trees are to the environment.

“It helps improve the aesthetics, manage space, regulate air and give shade to the environment.”

Clubs that collaborated for the execution of the tree planting project include Rotaract club of UNN, Rotary Club of Nsukka, Plogging Nigeria, UNN, Rotaract Club of Nsukka, ICCSEE-UNN and the University administration.

The University administrators present at the exercise were Mr. Laz Okeke, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Ejikeme, Head of Chemistry Department, Prof. Grace Ofoma, Faculty of Education, Prof. F.N. Okeke, Prof. Godswill Chukwunonso, Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, Mr. Paul Oranu – ICT Director and Dr. Ngozi Osadebe.
