Pope Francis Passes Away at 88, Ends Transformative 12-Year Pontificate

April 21, 2025

Pope Francis, the 266th Bishop of Rome and spiritual leader of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics, has died at the age of 88 after a prolonged battle with double pneumonia. His death marks the end of a 12-year reign that brought profound reforms in the Catholic Church.

The Vatican announced his passing in a solemn statement: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 (Italian Local time) this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936, Francis was the first Jesuit pope and the first from the Americas. His papacy was defined by a pastoral approach, advocacy for the poor, and efforts to modernise the Church—though his progressive stances on social issues often sparked controversy among traditionalists.

The Holy Father had long battled respiratory illnesses, dating back to a lung infection in his youth that required surgery in 1957. In recent years, his health declined significantly. He was hospitalised at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in February 2025 after suffering severe bronchitis. Though discharged in early April to continue recovery, his condition worsened in recent days.

Pope Francis will be remembered for his emphasis on mercy, environmental stewardship (Laudato Si’), and outreach to marginalised communities, including refugees and LGBTQ+ Catholics. His synodal reforms sought to decentralise Church authority, though resistance from conservative factions often stalled his vision.

Critics accused him of diluting doctrine, particularly on divorce, communion for the remarried, and same-sex blessings. Yet supporters hailed him as a revolutionary pastor who prioritised humility—eschewing papal grandeur in favour of simplicity.

Leaders worldwide have expressed condolences, with the Vatican praising his life of service: “His entire life was dedicated to the Lord and His Church… We commend his soul to the infinite merciful love of God.”
As the Church enters a period of mourning, preparations for a funeral and conclave to elect his successor will begin.
