The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has announced that the fourth edition of the Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture will hold on July 23, 2026, in Lagos, with discussions centred on the role of the media, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and voters in advancing credible elections in Nigeria, Prime Business Africa reports.
The annual lecture, instituted by the Guild in 2023 to honour the legacy of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande an accomplished journalist, former President of the NGE, former Governor of Lagos State and former Minister of Works will take place at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, beginning at 11 a.m.

According to a statement jointly signed by the NGE President, Eze Anaba, and the General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, this year’s lecture is themed: “The Media, INEC, Voters and the Path to Credible Elections.”
The lecture will be delivered by Professor Sylvester Odion Akhaine of the Department of Political Science, Lagos State University, while former Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, will chair the event.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is expected to attend as the Chief Host and Special Guest of Honour. Also expected are the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; former Ogun State Governor and media veteran, Chief Segun Osoba; Vanguard Newspapers publisher, Uncle Sam Amuka; senior government officials; managing directors and editors of print, broadcast and digital media organisations; as well as representatives of civil society groups.
The Guild also said lecturers and students of Mass Communication and Journalism from Caleb University, Lagos State University, Yaba College of Technology and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism will participate in the event.
According to the statement, the annual memorial lecture provides a platform for media leaders, public officials and civil society stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions on nation-building, governance and the role of the press in strengthening democracy.

The Guild described the lecture as a fitting tribute to Jakande’s enduring legacy of excellence in journalism, governance and public service, adding that it has evolved into a platform for thought leadership, policy dialogue and national reflection.
It added that inviting university students each year is intended to expose aspiring journalists to the values of service, professionalism and ethical journalism, while giving them the opportunity to interact with accomplished media practitioners who can serve as mentors and role models.
The inaugural edition of the memorial lecture was held in 2023 and delivered by Chief Felix Adenaike, a Fellow of the NGE. In 2024, Chairman of ThisDay and Arise News, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, delivered a lecture titled “Rapidly Changing Media Landscape: Survival Strategies.”
The third edition, held in 2025, featured Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, who spoke on the theme: “Journalism and the Challenge of Nation-Building in a Multi-Ethnic Society.”
