Iran Begins Week-Long Funeral for Late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Burial Set for July 9

July 3, 2026

Iran on Friday commenced a week-long state funeral for its late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with thousands of mourners gathering in Tehran to pay their final respects ahead of his burial in the northeastern city of Mashhad on July 9.

Khamenei’s body lay in state at the Grand Mosalla prayer hall in Tehran, where senior clerics, government officials, military commanders, foreign dignitaries and members of the public filed past his coffin.

The funeral marks the beginning of a series of ceremonies that will continue in the Iranian city of Qom and the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala before concluding with his interment at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad.

The funeral follows Khamenei’s death in February, when he was killed during the conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Although Islamic tradition prescribes burial within a day of death, authorities postponed the funeral because of security concerns during the war. The ceremonies are now taking place following an interim truce that eased hostilities.

Iranian authorities have mobilised extensive security and logistical arrangements for what is expected to be one of the country’s largest state funerals in decades. Hotels have offered discounted accommodation, while schools, mosques and sports halls have been converted into temporary shelters for mourners. Transport services have also been expanded to accommodate the anticipated influx of participants.

Khamenei’s coffin, unveiled on Thursday night before emotional supporters chanting religious hymns, was placed alongside those of family members killed in the same attack. On Friday, the coffins were displayed on a raised white dais draped in black mourning flags inside the Grand Mosalla prayer hall, built to honour the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Senior Iranian political and military leaders, including the president, parliamentary officials, cabinet members and commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, attended the ceremony, offering prayers beside the coffin. Among those present was the newly appointed commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Ahmad Vahidi, who made one of his first public appearances since assuming office.

The funeral has also drawn international participation, with about 30 foreign delegations in attendance. Among those present were former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, senior Chinese official He Wei and Iraqi President Nizar Amedi.

Representatives of Iran-backed groups, including the families of slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and commander Imad Mughniyeh, also attended the ceremony.

Authorities described the funeral as a demonstration of national unity and resilience following months of conflict. Military and police personnel have been deployed across Tehran, while members of the Basij volunteer force have intensified patrols as security remains tight throughout the capital. Iran has also warned the United States and Israel against any action that could disrupt the funeral ceremonies.

The funeral comes at a pivotal moment for the Islamic Republic as it seeks to project stability following months of conflict and amid a leadership transition.

Analysts say the ceremonies are intended to reinforce public support for the country’s ruling establishment despite persistent economic hardship, international sanctions and years of domestic unrest.

Following a major funeral procession in central Tehran on Monday, Khamenei’s remains will be taken to Qom for religious rites before proceeding to the Shi’ite holy cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq. He is expected to be buried on Thursday at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, one of the holiest sites in Shi’ite Islam.
