The Guild described the lecture as a fitting tribute to Jakande’s enduring legacy of excellence in journalism, governance and public service, adding that it has evolved into a platform for thought leadership, policy dialogue and national reflection.

It added that inviting university students each year is intended to expose aspiring journalists to the values of service, professionalism and ethical journalism, while giving them the opportunity to interact with accomplished media practitioners who can serve as mentors and role models.

The inaugural edition of the memorial lecture was held in 2023 and delivered by Chief Felix Adenaike, a Fellow of the NGE. In 2024, Chairman of ThisDay and Arise News, Prince Nduka Obaigbena, delivered a lecture titled “Rapidly Changing Media Landscape: Survival Strategies.”
