The United States Embassy in Bamako has issued a security alert warning of possible terrorist movements within Mali’s capital, urging American citizens to remain indoors and avoid non-essential travel, Prime Business Africa reports.
In the advisory released Tuesday, the embassy said it was aware of “reports of possible terrorist movements within Bamako, including reports of forced school closures,” signaling heightened concern over security in the city.
The warning comes days after coordinated attacks across Mali, including in Bamako and the nearby military town of Kati, underscoring a deteriorating security situation in the country.

According to multiple international reports, the attacks carried out on April 25 were linked to Islamist militants affiliated with al-Qaeda, particularly the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) group, alongside armed insurgent factions. The assaults targeted key military installations, government facilities, and areas near Bamako’s main airport, with witnesses reporting explosions and sustained gunfire.
The scale and coordination of the attacks have been described as among the most significant in Mali in recent years, raising fears of further incursions into the capital.
Although Mali’s transitional authorities, led by Colonel Assimi Goïta, have stated that the situation is under control, security sources indicate that counter-operations are ongoing, with concerns that militant elements may still be active within or around Bamako.
