CrowdStrike Apologises for Global IT Outage, As Systems Slowly Returning Online

George Kurtz, President and CEO of cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, has issued a public apology on Friday over a global IT outage that disrupted transportation, broadcasting, banking, and health services worldwide.

The outage, caused by a software update from CrowdStrike, impacted numerous critical sectors, leading to significant delays and operational challenges.

Speaking on NBC, one of the major television networks in the United States, Kurtz explained, “We’re resolving, and have resolved the issue now. As systems come back online, as they’re rebooted, they’re coming up and they’re working. And now we are working with each and every customer, to make sure that we can bring them back online.”

The update inadvertently affected a Microsoft operating system, causing widespread disruptions. Kurtz acknowledged the need for a thorough investigation into the compatibility issues, stating, “We need to further investigate the way some of these operating systems work. We’ve been working with our customers all night to address the issue. Many systems are coming back online after rebooting, and for those that aren’t, we are providing direct support.”

The outage had a far-reaching impact, with transportation systems, including rail and bus services, heavily affected in cities like Milan, Genoa in Italy. Airlines across America, Europe, and Asia experienced significant disruptions, leading to long lines at major airports and advisories for passengers to stay at home until further notice. Banks in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Britain reported service interruptions, and health services in Israel, Germany, and the UK were also impacted.

Microsoft confirmed that the “underlying cause” of the outage had been addressed but noted that some residual effects were still being managed. “We’re conducting additional mitigations to provide relief,” Microsoft stated in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

While some services have been restored, others continue to face challenges.
Kurtz emphasised CrowdStrike’s commitment to resolving the situation, saying, “It is our mission, it’s why we’re here, to make sure that every customer is fully recovered, and we’re not going to relent until we get every customer back to where they were. We continue to protect them and keep the bad guys out of their systems.”

He also expressed deep regret for the disruption caused, adding, “We’re deeply sorry for the impact that we caused to customers, to travellers, to anyone affected by this, including our companies.”
