Trump Says U.S., Iran Near Peace Agreement as Strait of Hormuz Reopening Discussed

May 24, 2026

Donald Trump has announced that the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran are close to finalising a major peace-related agreement following high-level talks involving leaders from the Middle East, Pakistan and Türkiye.

In a statement issued from the Oval Office at the White House, Trump said he held what he described as a “very good call” with several regional leaders, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Türkiye, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, and Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar.

Other leaders involved in the discussions included President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates, King Abdullah II of Jordan, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, and Pakistan’s military chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah.

Trump said the talks focused on Iran and a proposed Memorandum of Understanding “pertaining to peace,” adding that an agreement had been “largely negotiated,” although final details were still being discussed.

According to the U.S. president, the proposed arrangement involves the United States, Iran and several unnamed countries connected to the negotiations. He also disclosed that he separately spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, popularly known as Bibi Netanyahu, saying the conversation “went very well.”

Trump further stated that one of the major elements under discussion is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important oil shipping routes.

The White House has yet to release further details about the proposed agreement, while officials from Iran and the other countries mentioned have not publicly commented on the announcement.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, handles a significant share of global crude oil shipments, making any agreement affecting the waterway closely watched by international markets and global powers.
