From Cocaine Trail to AI Deepfakes: How Thai Police Uncovered an Alleged Nigerian Romance Scam Network

May 24, 2026

The investigation began with cocaine.

When Thai police arrested a Nigerian suspect identified as Patrick and three associates in April over alleged drug trafficking activities, investigators believed they were dealing with a routine narcotics case.

Officers seized assets reportedly worth 2.5 million baht and began tracing financial transactions connected to the operation.

What emerged instead was a far more sophisticated network hidden behind the doors of a luxury riverside condominium in Nonthaburi Province.

Weeks later, Thai authorities stormed three upscale apartments near the Phra Nangklao Bridge along the Chao Phraya River under an operation codenamed “Dark Room Crackdown,” uncovering what investigators described as an AI-powered romance scam syndicate allegedly operated by six Nigerian nationals.

Inside the apartments, police said they found 18 mobile phones, three laptops and several bank passbooks. Some of the phones, investigators claimed, were still connected to active conversations with women believed to be targets of the alleged scam.

Authorities said the suspects were living five or six to a room inside the high-end condominium despite holding student visas and allegedly having no record of attending school or engaging in lawful employment in Thailand.

The raid itself unfolded dramatically.

According to police, officers were forced to break into the apartments after the occupants allegedly refused to open the doors, raising fears that evidence could be destroyed. One suspect reportedly attempted to flee through a balcony, while another was allegedly found hiding on a bathroom floor while sending warning messages to neighbouring units.

But it was what investigators discovered inside the devices that revealed the true scale of the alleged operation.

AI Faces, Fake Lives

Thai investigators alleged that the suspects used artificial intelligence technology to create fake online identities designed to deceive victims emotionally and financially.

Police said the group allegedly posed as wealthy Western professionals pilots, engineers, doctors, lawyers and United States military officers using AI-generated profile photographs and manipulated video calls to convince victims they were speaking to real people abroad.

The alleged targets were mostly older Thai women searching for companionship online.

Investigators claimed the suspects carefully built emotional relationships over time before introducing fabricated emergencies involving parcels, luxury gifts or valuable packages supposedly detained by customs officials. Victims were then pressured to send “clearance fees” or emergency payments to secure the release of the fictitious items.

Authorities also said they recovered pre-written romance scripts and sexually suggestive chat templates allegedly designed to manipulate victims psychologically and encourage financial transfers.

Police involved in the investigation reportedly described the conversations as highly calculated, with carefully crafted emotional messages used to gain trust before requests for money were introduced.

The case has drawn renewed attention to the growing use of artificial intelligence in cyber-enabled fraud across Southeast Asia, where criminal networks are increasingly using deepfake technology and digital impersonation to make online scams appear more convincing.

Thai media identified the six suspects as Denis, Ejikeme, Ibekwe, Okorom, Nwosu and Obielu, aged between 23 and 35. Authorities said five of the six had overstayed their visas for periods ranging from nearly two years to more than four years.

For now, the suspects are facing preliminary charges including immigration violations, unlawful association and visa overstay offences. Thai police said additional fraud and romance scam charges are expected as investigations continue.

What started as a narcotics probe has now exposed a darker intersection of organised crime, artificial intelligence and emotional manipulation one that investigators say may have victimised vulnerable people far beyond the walls of a luxury condominium overlooking the Chao Phraya River.
