Tanzania Vice-President Nchimbi Resigns, Announces Retirement From Politics

August 25, 2026

Tanzanian Vice-President Emmanuel John Nchimbi has resigned from office and announced his retirement from politics and public service, bringing his brief tenure in the country’s second-highest office to an end.

Nchimbi said his resignation would take effect on Sept. 4, according to a letter dated Tuesday and addressed to President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

In the letter, Nchimbi cited Article 50(2)(c), read together with Article 149(2), of Tanzania’s Constitution as the legal basis for his departure. He also said he had decided to withdraw from active politics and public service.

Nchimbi linked his decision to a commitment he made to Hassan before taking office. He said he had promised to support the president in carrying out her responsibilities and to step aside if she decided that the country needed a different vice-president.

He said he had become convinced that Hassan wanted a change in the office and had therefore chosen to honour that commitment.

Nchimbi was sworn in as vice-president on Nov. 3, 2025, after serving as Hassan’s running mate in the October 2025 general election. His resignation will therefore come less than a year after he assumed office.

Before becoming vice-president, Nchimbi held several senior government, diplomatic and Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) positions.

In announcing his departure, Nchimbi thanked Hassan, CCM and Tanzanians for the confidence and support they had shown him during his time in public service.

He also pledged to remain a responsible citizen after leaving office.

“I assure you that I will continue to be a good citizen of Tanzania,” Nchimbi said in his letter.

His resignation will create a vacancy in the vice-presidential office and set the stage for the selection of Hassan’s next deputy.

Nchimbi’s departure has attracted attention because of the brevity of his tenure. However, his resignation letter did not cite any dispute with Hassan, CCM or the government, nor did it provide another reason for his decision beyond his stated commitment to step aside if the president wanted a change.

His departure marks a significant change in Tanzania’s political leadership and brings to an end a career in active public service that included senior government, diplomatic and party positions.
