Nigeria Showcases Military Diplomacy at Benin’s 66th Independence Anniversary

The Nigerian Army delivered a standout performance at the Republic of Benin’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebration in Cotonou, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to military diplomacy and deepening bilateral and regional cooperation, Prime Business Africa reports.

 

The event, held at the iconic Amazone, brought together government officials, diplomats and military contingents from friendly nations to celebrate Benin’s independence while reaffirming shared commitments to peace, security and regional integration across West Africa.

Leading the Nigerian delegation, Commander of the 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi, supervised a flawless march past executed in both slow and quick time. The display of discipline, precision and coordination earned applause from Benin’s President, Romuald Wadagni, alongside other dignitaries and thousands of spectators.

The Nigerian Army’s silent drill performance emerged as one of the highlights of the celebration. Showcasing exceptional dexterity, synchronisation and mastery of arms handling, the display captivated the audience and received sustained ovation from guests at the ceremony.

Among those in attendance were Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim; the Nigerian Defence Attaché to Benin, Colonel S.A. Yahaya; senior military officers; government officials; members of the diplomatic corps; and representatives of other friendly nations.

Beyond the ceremonial displays, Nigeria’s participation reflected the increasing importance of defence diplomacy in strengthening bilateral relations with neighbouring countries. It also highlighted the Nigerian Army’s role in fostering regional partnerships, enhancing military cooperation and supporting collective peace and security efforts across West Africa.

The celebration further reaffirmed the longstanding historical, cultural and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, while reinforcing both countries’ shared commitment to regional stability, mutual respect and good neighbourliness.
