Amanze Chinonye
The Nigerian Army has deployed a fresh contingent of troops to the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace, security and stability in West Africa, Prime Business Africa reports.
The contingent, designated Nigerian Company 5 (NIGCOY 5 ESSMGB), comprises 86 personnel. The troops departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, aboard a Nigerian Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and have arrived safely in Guinea-Bissau to commence their mission under the ECOWAS mandate.

Before their departure from the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Forward Operating Base in Abuja, the Chief of Operations (Army), Major General M.L.D. Saraso, represented by the Director of Peace Support Operations, Brigadier General M.M. Idris, charged the troops to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and operational excellence throughout the mission.
He urged them to conduct themselves as worthy ambassadors of the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the country by faithfully executing their mandate while respecting the laws, customs and traditions of the host nation.
Brigadier General Idris also reminded the personnel to maintain zero tolerance for sexual exploitation and abuse, substance abuse, indiscipline and the irresponsible use of social media during the deployment.
The Army said the deployment underscores Nigeria’s continued commitment to regional peace support operations and its role in promoting stability across the West African sub-region.
It noted that Nigeria has remained one of Africa’s leading contributors to peace support missions, having participated in numerous operations under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union and the United Nations.
According to the Army, the latest deployment reflects Nigeria’s sustained efforts to support conflict prevention, peacebuilding and post-conflict stabilisation, while strengthening collective security across the region.
