The Lagos State Police Command has announced that it will commence a statewide enforcement operation against vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced or missing registration number plates from Monday, June 15, 2026, Prime Business Africa reports.
The command said the exercise is in compliance with a directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at enhancing public safety, strengthening security and preventing criminal elements from concealing their identities and activities.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai, directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state to begin immediate enforcement of the directive within their respective jurisdictions.
According to the statement, any vehicle found operating with covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced or no registration number plates will be impounded and subjected to thorough investigation in line with existing laws and established procedures.
The command explained that the operation is intended to improve the ability of security agencies to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track criminal suspects and strengthen the state’s overall security architecture.
“The enforcement exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists. Rather, it is a proactive security measure designed to enhance the capacity of police operatives to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track criminal suspects and strengthen the overall security architecture of the state,” the statement said.
The police therefore advised motorists, transport operators, fleet owners and other vehicle users to ensure that their vehicles carry valid, duly issued and clearly visible registration number plates at all times.
Vehicle owners were also urged to ensure that all relevant vehicle documents are up-to-date and readily available for inspection whenever required by law enforcement officers.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining a secure environment for residents and visitors in Lagos State.
It also appealed for public cooperation, noting that the success of the enforcement exercise and other policing efforts depends largely on the support and collaboration of residents.
The police further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities through the command’s emergency lines as part of efforts to improve security across the state.
The enforcement drive follows the IGP’s recent nationwide directive ordering police commands across the country to intensify action against vehicles operating without registration plates or with concealed, altered, defaced or otherwise obscured registration numbers, which authorities have described as a growing security concern.
