Iran Names Former Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan as National Security Chief

March 19, 2026

Iran has reportedly appointed Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan, a former defence minister and senior military adviser, as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) following the death of Ali Larijani in an Israeli airstrike.

Larijani, who had been SNSC secretary since August 2025, was killed in Tehran on March 17, along with other senior officials, in a strike described as a major blow to Iran’s leadership amid ongoing regional tensions.

Dehghan, a trusted adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, served as defence minister from 2013 to 2017 and has held senior roles in Iran’s military and strategic planning apparatus. His appointment would place an experienced military figure at the helm of Iran’s key national security body.

The SNSC is Iran’s top consultative body on national security and foreign policy, with the secretary directing council operations alongside the president and supreme leader.

As of now, the appointment is reported and more details are expected to provide verification in the coming hours.
