Iran Announces Closure of Strait of Hormuz, Cites U.S., Israeli Ceasefire Violations

June 20, 2026

Iran’s top joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, announced on Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz has been closed to vessel traffic, citing what it described as violations of a ceasefire agreement by the United States and Israel.

According to Iran’s state-run Mehr News Agency, the military command said the closure was the “first step” in response to alleged breaches of commitments under the ceasefire arrangement and warned that further measures could follow if what it termed continued “aggression” persists.

The announcement marks a significant escalation in tensions across the Middle East and raises fresh concerns over global energy supplies and maritime trade, given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz to international oil and gas shipments.

Iran accused the United States of failing to uphold aspects of a memorandum of understanding and alleged that Israel had continued military operations in southern Lebanon despite the ceasefire. Tehran said the closure was a direct response to those actions.

Any disruption to traffic through the waterway could have immediate implications for energy markets, shipping operations and fuel prices worldwide.

Iranian authorities did not immediately provide details on how the closure would be enforced or indicate how long the restrictions would remain in place.

The development is expected to attract close attention from governments, energy producers and shipping companies, many of which depend on the uninterrupted movement of vessels through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets.

As of the time of filing this report, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz had ceased. However, the announcement is likely to heighten concerns over regional stability and the security of one of the world’s most important energy transit corridors.
