Germany’s Consulate-General in St Petersburg has closed after more than five decades of operations, following a Russian order that ended the diplomatic mission’s presence in the city.
The consulate ceased operations on Sept. 18 after Moscow withdrew its authorisation for the mission to operate and required its staff to leave Russia by the same date.

The closure was marked by the removal of Germany’s flag, federal coat of arms and other official symbols from the consulate building on Furshtatskaya Street.
Germany’s Foreign Ministry said the consulate’s remaining responsibilities would be handled by the German Embassy in Moscow. Visa applications from Russia have been processed exclusively through the embassy since 2023.
The consulate opened in St Petersburg in 1972 and had maintained Germany’s consular presence in the city for more than 50 years.
The closure followed a series of reciprocal diplomatic measures between Berlin and Moscow. Germany had ordered the closure of Russia’s Consulate-General in Bonn and the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin. Moscow subsequently ordered the closure of the German consulate in St Petersburg and Goethe-Institut cultural centres in Russia.

The dispute has coincided with heightened tensions over an alleged drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August. German authorities accused Russia of involvement, while Moscow rejected the allegation and described Berlin’s position as an escalation of bilateral tensions.
The German diplomatic presence in St Petersburg has also been affected beyond the consulate. A German school in the city, which opened in 2009 and served about 150 pupils, has also closed.
The latest measures further reduce diplomatic and cultural contacts between Germany and Russia, which have deteriorated sharply since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
