First of all, it looks like Apple will finally be joining the rest of the smartphone world and switching to a USB-C charging connector instead of its exclusive lightning port. This change is due to EU law, but don’t worry, Apple is making the most of it. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, only the high-end models, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, will support fast data transfer with USB-C, while the standard models will still have USB 2.0. We’re also expecting some new USB-C accessories from Apple, like USB-C AirPods.
Now let us dive a little deeper into the iPhone 15 and what we can expect from it.
To start, let’s talk about the USB-C connector that is rumoured to replace the lightning charging port. This is a big change for Apple, as they have always stuck to their proprietary ports. But, by 2024, all smartphone manufacturers are required by EU law to use the universal USB-C connector, so this shift is somewhat compelled. According to Apple analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, all 2023 new iPhones will abandon Lightning and move to USB-C, but only the two high-end models (15 Pro and 15 Pro Max) will support wired high-speed transfer, while the two standard models (15 and 15 Plus) will still support USB 2.0.
While this may not be a radical departure from previous iPhones, it is sure to be one of the most talked-about upgrades. The USB-C port will allow for faster data transfer and will make it easier for users to connect their devices to a variety of accessories. Apple has not yet revealed a release date for the update, but it is expected that the iPhone 15 series will be the first to have a USB-C connector. Regarding specs, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra are rumoured to have the new A17 processor, while the regular iPhone 15 will have the A16 from the iPhone 14 Pro. The A17 chip is expected to be faster and more energy-efficient, with a 15% increase in speed and power and a 30% increase in power savings compared to existing 5nm devices. The iPhone 15 Pro may also have an upgrade to 8GB of RAM, and the amount of storage may vary depending on the capabilities of the iPhone 15.
