The Federal Government has launched the 2026 Wet Season Farming Intervention under the Renewed Hope Smallholder Support and Value Chain Programme, reinforcing its commitment to increasing food production, improving farmers’ incomes and strengthening food security across the country, Prime Business Africa reports.

The programme is expected to benefit two million smallholder farmers nationwide by providing improved access to agricultural inputs, financing, training and guaranteed markets as part of a broader strategy to transform subsistence farming into commercially viable agriculture.

Under the intervention, participating farmers will receive certified seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals and extension services to enhance productivity during the wet farming season. Government officials said more than 10 million bags of fertilizer would be deployed nationwide to support cultivation, although some officials put the figure at over 12 million bags.

A major component of the programme is the introduction of a Guaranteed Minimum Price (GMP) for selected agricultural commodities to shield farmers from exploitative pricing and reduce post-harvest losses. The government will also partner with commodity aggregators to guarantee produce offtake, ensuring farmers have reliable buyers and improved access to markets.

Beyond the distribution of farm inputs, the programme adopts a comprehensive value-chain approach, integrating financing, logistics, storage, mechanisation, climate-smart agricultural practices, extension support, capacity building and market access. The initiative is expected to boost productivity, minimise post-harvest losses and strengthen agricultural value chains nationwide.

According to the Federal Government, nearly 300,000 farmers have already been enrolled through the Bank of Agriculture ahead of the nationwide rollout, with more beneficiaries expected to be registered as implementation expands across the country.

Officials said the intervention builds on previous agricultural support initiatives, including the distribution of two million free bags of fertilizer, but significantly broadens the scope of government assistance by introducing a holistic value-chain model that links production with processing, storage and marketing.

The Federal Government expressed confidence that the programme would increase domestic food production, improve food availability and affordability, raise farmers’ incomes, create jobs across the agricultural sector and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
