Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has confirmed the release of good governance activists Peter Akah, popularly known as Peter for Nigeria, and Precious Oruche, also known as Mama Pee, after they honoured an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations bordering on the abuse of the naira, Prime Business Africa reports.
Effiong, in a statement issued on Thursday, July 16, 2026, said the activists were invited by the commission through separate letters dated June 24, 2026, to provide clarification on the matter. They were initially scheduled to appear before the EFCC on July 6 but requested a new date because they were unavailable.

According to the lawyer, the rescheduled meeting held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the EFCC headquarters, where he accompanied both activists to meet with investigators.
He said the session, which lasted several hours, was conducted professionally by EFCC officials, adding that the activists cooperated fully with the investigation before they were released.
“After cooperating with the Commission, our clients were released and we departed the EFCC’s Headquarters. We will be going today in furtherance of the investigation,” Effiong stated.
The lawyer said Peter Akah and Precious Oruche clarified during the interaction that the items referenced in the allegation were entertainment props and not genuine naira notes.
“Our clients clarified that what was referenced were props money for entertainment and not naira notes,” he added.
The invitation had generated public concern over the whereabouts and safety of the two activists, with supporters and members of the public seeking updates on their condition.
