President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to return to court and seek the lifting of the order freezing the accounts of the Osun State Government, while discontinuing all related actions, Prime Business Africa reports.
The President’s intervention comes amid concerns over the timing of the EFCC’s action, which was taken only days before the Osun State governorship election.

Tinubu said he was “deeply embarrassed” not by the commission’s decision to exercise its mandate under a valid court order, but by the timing of the action, which he said could create the impression that a federal institution was being used to influence the electoral process.
“Every action taken by an institution of state, especially at the federal level, is always credited to me as the President, even when I may not have had any prior knowledge of the action,” the statement read.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to the independence of anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies, stressing that they must operate professionally and without political interference.
He said he had deliberately refrained from directing or interfering in the operational activities of the EFCC and other investigative agencies, maintaining that they must be allowed to carry out their responsibilities in accordance with the law.

However, Tinubu described the timing of the account freeze as “inauspicious” because of its proximity to the governorship election.
“Nothing ought to be done to give an impression that the EFCC, or indeed any other agency of the Federal Government, is being used to interfere with the election,” the President said.
The EFCC’s action triggered political concerns over its potential impact on public perceptions of the neutrality of federal institutions during the electoral period.
While the commission’s mandate to investigate alleged financial crimes remains unchanged, the controversy shifted attention to whether the timing of the move could undermine confidence in the electoral process.
The directive for the EFCC to seek the reversal of the freezing order comes as Osun enters the final stretch of preparations for its governorship election, where the neutrality of public institutions and the integrity of the electoral process remain under close public scrutiny.
