Atiku Moves to Heal Coalition Divisions, Appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as Spokesperson

July 2, 2026

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his spokesperson in a strategic move aimed at strengthening internal cohesion within his emerging political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, Prime Business Africa reports.

Okonkwo disclosed the appointment in a statement on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to Atiku for the confidence reposed in him and describing the development as both an honour and a responsibility.

“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I thank His Excellency for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he said.

He said the appointment reflects Atiku’s democratic disposition, noting that the former Vice President prefers dialogue and compromise in resolving internal disagreements rather than confrontation.

According to him, recent engagements involving Atiku and stakeholders within the African Democratic Congress focused on addressing concerns around inclusivity and the political interests of the South-East within the framework of existing electoral laws and prevailing political realities.

Okonkwo added that assurances were given regarding the place of the South-East in the evolving political arrangement, following deliberations held within the coalition structure.

He also acknowledged the roles of several political actors in the coalition-building process, including Dr Kashim Imam, whom he credited for his intervention and guidance in promoting inclusiveness across ethnic and regional lines.

The former Labour Party spokesman further expressed appreciation to Ralphs Nwosu, former National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, for what he described as sustained efforts in stabilising the party amid internal and external pressures.

He also commended Dr Ekene Onwuka, Senior Special Assistant to Atiku on Special Duties, for contributing to efforts aimed at building a coordinated campaign structure ahead of the 2027 elections.

Okonkwo, who has recently emerged as a prominent voice within opposition realignments, said the appointment also reflects broader consultations within the coalition as it seeks to position itself as a viable alternative in the next general election cycle.

He thanked his family, supporters, and associates for their encouragement, adding that he would rely on continued support as he assumes what he described as a demanding but significant role.

The development comes amid ongoing political negotiations and restructuring within opposition blocs seeking to challenge the ruling party in 2027, with analysts viewing the appointment as part of efforts to consolidate messaging and reduce internal friction within the coalition.
