NYSC: New Uniforms Will Be Locally Produced Using Ankara, Adire – Minister Olawande

July 2, 2026

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has said the redesigned National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform will be produced locally, describing the initiative as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s textile industry and promote the use of indigenous fabrics, Prime Business Africa reports.

Olawande made the disclosure during an interview on The Morning Brief on Channels Television on Thursday.

Responding to concerns over whether the new uniforms would be manufactured in Nigeria, the minister said the redesigned attire would feature locally sourced materials, including Ankara and Adire, which are produced in different parts of the country.

“It’s Ankara, it’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have a textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” he said.

Fifty-Three Years After, NYSC Undergoes Holistic Reform

The minister’s remarks come on the heels of the Federal Government’s approval of a sweeping overhaul of the NYSC, which includes the introduction of a redesigned uniform as part of broader reforms aimed at transforming the scheme into a skills-driven and productivity-focused institution.

The approved reforms also provide for a civilian-led operational structure, a redesigned orientation programme with greater emphasis on skills acquisition and entrepreneurship, and a technology-driven deployment system, among other changes.

HURIWA Calls for National Debate on NYSC Reforms, Says FEC Approval Misses Core Integration Mandate

According to Analysts, the decision to produce the new uniforms locally is expected to complement the broader reform agenda by stimulating domestic manufacturing, supporting Nigeria’s textile value chain, and increasing government patronage of locally made products.

Established in 1973, the NYSC was created to foster national integration by deploying graduates to states outside their regions of origin for one year of compulsory national service.

The latest reforms represent the most extensive restructuring of the scheme since its inception, signalling the government’s intention to align it more closely with Nigeria’s economic and youth development objectives.
