APC’s Idris Wins Kebbi Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nasiru Idris, as the winner of the 2023 governorship election in Kebbi State.

The state Returning Officer, Yusuf Saidu made the declaration in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital on Sunday.

Saidu, a Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), said Idris polled a total of 409,225 votes to beat his close rival of the Peoples Democratic Party, Major General Aminu Bande (rtd.) who scored 360,940 votes.

The Returning Officer said: “I, Professor Yusuf Saidu, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2023 Kebbi State Governorship Election held on the 15th day of April 2023.

“That Idris Nasiru of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby the winner and is returned elected.”

Kebbi was one of the states where INEC conducted supplementary elections on Saturday, 15th April.

The electoral body had on 20th March, declared the governorship election in Kebbi state inconclusive over what the state REC described as irregularities that marred elections in 18 local government areas of the state.

Until his emergence of the APC candidate in the Kebbi governorship race, Idris was the national president of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Idris will be taking over from the incumbent Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who will leave office on May 29.

He is an educationist with Ph.D. in education and has participated in labour movement where he played key roles in negotiating better working conditions and welfare packages for Nigerian workers.
