The All Progressives Congress says it plans to adopt a consensus method to choose its national leadership at its convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja.
Mary Ikoku, assistant secretary for media and publicity for the APC National Convention 2026, disclosed the plan on Wednesday during a television interview.
Ikoku said the party had not taken a final decision on how candidates for elective positions would be selected, noting that approaches could differ based on local political considerations.

She added that consensus may not be feasible in all cases, especially for contested positions.
Ikoku also spoke on provisions of the Electoral Act governing party primaries, including requirements for online membership registration and recognised methods of candidate selection.
According to her, the law permits direct primaries and consensus, while indirect primaries have been removed.
“That is the current law of the nation,” she said, adding that difficulties faced by some parties in complying point to gaps in preparation.
“Any political party that is worth its salt should not wait until election season to begin preparations,” Ikoku said.
Ahead of the convention, the APC has begun screening aspirants for positions in its National Working Committee. Those screened include national chairman aspirant Nentawe Yilwatda and national secretary hopeful Ajibola Basiru.
