APC Convention: Party Rules Out Crisis, Sets Stage for 2027 Electoral Push

March 25, 2026

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns over a possible internal crisis ahead of its National Convention, as party officials project unity and readiness for the 2027 general elections.

The Deputy National Organising Secretary of the APC, Chidi Nze Duru, said preparations for the convention reflect strong internal coordination and consensus-building mechanisms designed to prevent divisions within the ruling party.

Duru spoke in Abuja after being cleared by the party’s National Convention Screening Committee at the Transcorp Hilton, insisting that the APC’s approach to leadership selection demonstrates institutional maturity rather than a lack of internal democracy.

“I would like to see the exercise as majorly consensus-building,” he said. “It underpins the basic tenet for which APC is known bringing people together behind the scenes and working hard to ensure there is no rupture and no implosion.”

The APC National Convention, scheduled within the March 25–28, 2026 window, marks the culmination of a nationwide congress process conducted across ward, local government, state and zonal levels, in line with the party’s constitutional provisions.

As part of preparations, the party constituted a 73-member Central Coordination Committee chaired by Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, to oversee logistics and ensure a smooth exercise. Screening and appeals processes were also built into the timetable to manage disputes arising from the selection of party officials.

Duru acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable in a large political organisation but maintained that the APC has developed internal mechanisms to resolve conflicts and maintain cohesion.

“Once a party has the internal mechanism to bring people together and say there can only be one person occupying a particular office, it augurs well for ensuring the party is built on firm foundations,” he said.

FCT Polls: APC Dominance Masks Deeper Questions for 2027

The convention is widely regarded as a critical moment for the APC, as it will determine the party’s national leadership and strategic direction ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Looking ahead, Duru expressed confidence that the ruling party is positioning itself for a broad-based electoral victory in 2027, with a strategy focused on nationwide appeal rather than regional dominance.

“Our push and our mantra is to deliver all the states, including the FCT,” he said. “Whether it is South-East, South-West, North-Central, or North-West, the party is positioned and primed to win a majority of the votes in all the nooks and corners of Nigeria.”

He added that the influx of high-profile members into the party has strengthened its standing as the dominant political platform ahead of the elections.

While acknowledging current economic challenges, Duru said the APC-led administration is laying the groundwork for recovery, expressing optimism that tangible improvements will become evident in the coming months.

“The government is taking steady steps to ensure that those challenges are moderated,” he said. “In the next few months, you will begin to see the results of the hard work being done by this government.”

The APC has not officially responded to criticisms from opposition parties regarding its consensus approach, but party officials insist the process is aimed at fostering unity and stability as it prepares for the 2027 polls.
