Urhobo Ethnic Nationality Signs Niger Delta Peoples Charter

Urhobo ethnic nationality has signed the Niger Delta Peoples Charter for resource control, political/economic autonomy and self determination.

According to a statement by the Niger Delta Congress (NDC), National Spokesperson, Barr. Ovunda Eni, the Commissioner representing Urhobo at the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Commission (DESOPADEC), Chief Vincent Oyibode signed the charter on behalf of Urhobo people on Friday February 25, 2022, at Warri in Delta State.

By giving their signatory to the charter, Urhobo has joined other ethnic nationalities and groups in the Niger Delta region in supporting the proposed document to be used as instrument of gaining political and economic autonomy and right of self determination by the region.

The Niger Delta Peoples Charter was drafted by members of the NDC which consist of people from ethnic nationalities in the oil-rich region, on October 8, 2021 to demand for what they perceive as their “inalienable rights” in Nigeria.

Part of the demand in the charter is a review of the Nigeria’s 1999 constitutional provisions on resource control, political and economic autonomy, and self determination.

The NDC has been rallying various groups and ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta region to sign the charter as a reflection of their collective support for the agitation.
