Former Central Bank of Nigeria Deputy Governor Kingsley Moghalu on Saturday urged university graduates in Kenya to embrace lifelong learning and continually update their skills as artificial intelligence and automation reshape the workplace, Prime Business Africa reports.

Moghalu, speaking at the 48th commencement ceremony of the United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) in Nairobi, said graduates should view their degrees not as the end of their education but as a foundation for adapting to technological and economic changes.

“You have not just earned a credential; you have built a muscle,” Moghalu told the Class of 2026, referring to the ability developed through university to pursue goals, process complex information and complete demanding tasks.

He said some technical knowledge acquired by students could become outdated as technology advances, making the ability to learn, unlearn and acquire new skills increasingly important.

Moghalu, president of the Institute for Governance and Economic Transformation, cited his career across law, journalism, international diplomacy, entrepreneurship, central banking and academia as an example of the value of interdisciplinary training and professional reinvention.

Addressing concerns about artificial intelligence, Moghalu said the technology should be treated as a tool rather than an authority. He noted that AI could perform tasks such as analysing information, writing code and optimising processes, but said human judgment remained important in areas including ethics, empathy and leadership.

“Technology is an exoskeleton for the mind,” Moghalu said. “It makes you faster, stronger, and more efficient. But it does not give you a destination.”

He also urged graduates to maintain a broad education alongside professional specialisation, saying liberal arts training could help them connect ideas across disciplines while developing critical thinking and emotional intelligence.

Moghalu encouraged the graduates to embrace what he called “intentional friction” by engaging with difficult ideas, problems and decisions rather than always choosing the easiest or fastest option.

“The world you are entering is not a finished product. It is a rough draft,” he said, urging the graduates to use their skills to tackle problems and contribute to shaping society.
