The United States has announced an additional $242 million in funding to support the Ebola response in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), nearly doubling its financial commitment as health authorities battle one of the largest outbreaks of the disease ever recorded.

The latest allocation brings total U.S. assistance for the emergency response to more than $512 million, making Washington the largest single contributor to efforts aimed at containing the outbreak.

The funding will support critical response activities, including Ebola treatment, disease surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, infection prevention and control measures, as well as the deployment of medical supplies and humanitarian assistance in affected communities.

U.S. officials said the new funding will help sustain operations in more than 180 health facilities and support the delivery of nearly 300 tonnes of medical supplies to areas affected by the outbreak and neighbouring regions at risk of transmission.

The outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, has become the second-largest Ebola epidemic on record, behind the 2014–2016 outbreak in West Africa, which killed more than 11,000 people.

Health authorities say the current crisis has been worsened by delayed detection, weak surveillance systems, insecurity linked to armed conflict in eastern Congo and limited access to affected communities. The circulating strain also has no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

Data from health authorities show that the outbreak has recorded thousands of confirmed cases and more than 1,700 deaths, while the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the actual number of infections could be significantly higher due to undetected cases.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that the outbreak is spreading faster than the international response, urging greater funding, improved protection for health workers and stronger community engagement to contain transmission.

Aid organisations have also raised concerns over the scale of the crisis, warning that continued delays in expanding response operations could allow the virus to spread further.

The new U.S. funding comes as global health agencies intensify efforts to prevent the outbreak from becoming one of the deadliest Ebola epidemics in history, with particular concern over the risk of cross-border transmission in the Great Lakes region of Africa.
