Senegal National Assembly President El Malick Ndiaye Resigns

The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, El Malick Ndiaye, has resigned from office, citing what he described as a decision guided by “the supreme interest of the Nation” and his personal conception of public responsibility and state institutions Prime Business Africa reports.

In a statement announcing his resignation, Ndiaye said the decision followed “deep reflection” and was motivated by a sense of duty, responsibility, and commitment to Senegal’s democratic institutions.

The former parliamentary leader said he had dedicated his tenure to strengthening the National Assembly through institutional reforms, transparency, modernization, and improved parliamentary oversight, while also working to enhance the profile of the Senegalese Parliament both locally and internationally.

“I have devoted all my energy, alongside all the deputies and the parliamentary administration, to strengthening our institution,” he stated.

Ndiaye thanked lawmakers from both the ruling majority and opposition, members of the parliamentary administration, his cabinet staff, and the Senegalese people for their support and cooperation during his time in office.

He also expressed appreciation to members and supporters of the ruling PASTEF party, under whose platform he emerged as head of the legislature, describing their commitment to political transformation as a major source of strength and responsibility throughout his leadership.

While not disclosing the specific reasons behind his resignation, Ndiaye stressed the need to preserve institutional stability, republican dialogue, civil peace, and national cohesion in Senegal.

“At the moment I leave this high office, I remain deeply convinced that the stability of our institutions, respect for republican dialogue, the preservation of civil peace, national cohesion, and the supreme interest of Senegal must remain, in all circumstances, our common compass,” he said.

He added that he would continue contributing to Senegal’s democracy and national development despite stepping down from the leadership of the National Assembly.

Ndiaye concluded his statement with prayers for peace, justice, unity, and prosperity in Senegal.
