Sonko Elected Speaker of Senegal National Assembly Amid Political Shake-Up

May 26, 2026

A major political realignment has unfolded in Senegal as former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has reportedly been elected President (Speaker) of the country’s National Assembly, marking a dramatic return to frontline governance just days after his removal from the executive, Prime Business Africa reports.

According to parliamentary proceedings held in Dakar on Tuesday, Sonko secured a landslide victory in the vote, winning 132 votes against a single opposition vote, in what lawmakers described as a decisive consolidation of power by the ruling majority.

Sonko Moves to Tighten Grip on Senegal Parliament After PM Ouster

The development positions Sonko as the second most powerful figure in Senegal’s political hierarchy, placing him directly after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the country’s constitutional order.

The vote followed the resignation of former Assembly Speaker El Malick Ndiaye on Sunday, a move widely seen as clearing the path for Sonko’s return to the legislature and subsequent elevation to the leadership of the chamber.

Reports indicate that the transition is part of a broader political shake-up triggered by President Faye’s decision on May 22 to dissolve the government amid rising tensions over economic policy and ongoing negotiations on national debt management.

Sonko, who also leads the ruling PASTEF, is now expected to wield significant influence over legislative affairs, with analysts suggesting his new position could reshape the balance of power between the presidency and parliament.

The outcome effectively places control of both the executive and legislative branches within the ruling political movement, although the internal dynamics between President Faye and Sonko remain closely watched amid reports of strained relations in recent weeks.

As of publication, the presidency and National Assembly have not issued formal statements detailing the implications of the leadership change or addressing the reported dissolution of government structures preceding the vote.

The situation continues to develop.
