The President of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), Ibrahim Traore, has strongly condemned the coordinated terrorist attacks carried out across the Republic of Mali on April 25, 2026, describing them as a calculated attempt to destabilise the region and undermine its sovereignty drive, Prime Business Africa reports.
In a communique issued from Ouagadougou, Traore said the attacks targeted multiple locations and bore the hallmarks of a long-planned operation, involving significant logistical coordination, personnel, and weaponry aimed at inflicting heavy casualties on Malian defence forces and spreading fear among civilians.
“The persistence of these barbaric and inhumane attacks bears the mark of a conspiracy supported by enemies of the Sahel’s liberation struggle,” the statement read, linking the violence to forces opposed to the confederation’s push for autonomy and regional self-determination.

Despite the scale of the assault, the AES leader said the attacks were repelled by what he described as a “professional, courageous, and determined” response from the Malian Armed Forces. He praised their efforts in neutralising the attackers and preventing further devastation.
The statement emphasised that the attacks would not weaken the resolve of Sahelian nations, reaffirming the bloc’s commitment to “freedom, sovereignty, and dignity.”
Traore extended condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a swift recovery, while also expressing “total, unconditional, and fraternal solidarity” with the Malian government and its people.
He further acknowledged the support of allied states and partners who have shown solidarity with Mali in the aftermath of the attacks, noting that such backing reinforces the collective resolve of the Sahel region.
The Confederation of Sahel States comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger has in recent years positioned itself as a regional alliance seeking greater political and security independence, amid ongoing insurgency threats and shifting geopolitical alliances in the Sahel.
