Cloudflare Meltdown Sends Shockwaves Across the Internet, Revealing Systemic Fragility

November 18, 2025

A major global outage at internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare has caused widespread disruption to websites and online services, highlighting the fragility of internet systems heavily dependent on a single provider.

According to verified sources, the outage began around 11:20 UTC on Tuesday, affecting users across all time zones. Within the first hour, Downdetector recorded over 11,000 reports from the United States and 3,800 reports from the United Kingdom. Critical services across multiple sectors failed simultaneously.

Users reported a variety of errors, including:

  • HTTP 500 (Internal Server Error) – the most common
  • HTTP 502 (Bad Gateway)
  • HTTP 503 (Service Unavailable)
  • Failed Turnstile CAPTCHA verification
  • Dashboard and API completely offline

Among the affected services were:

  • X (formerly Twitter) – posts failed to load
  • ChatGPT – API blocked globally
  • PayPal – transactions failing
  • Uber Eats – order system down
  • League of Legends – gaming disrupted
  • Canva – design tools inaccessible
  • Downdetector – unable to report outages

Cloudflare acknowledged an “internal service degradation” on its status page, deploying a fix and moving into a monitoring phase. However, some services are still experiencing instability. A spike in unusual traffic has been cited as the trigger, but no detailed root cause has been disclosed.

Experts say the outage underscores the systemic risk of centralized internet infrastructure. One company’s failure caused cascading disruptions across multiple services, revealing zero geographic isolation and multiple points of vulnerability.

“This wasn’t a small incident,” said a digital infrastructure analyst. “It was a systemic failure that exposed just how dependent the global internet has become on a single provider.”

As businesses and users continue to monitor service restoration, the incident raises urgent questions about the need for decentralization and redundancy in internet architecture.
