Portuguese top side Benfica on Tuesday night beat Germany Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich 1-0 to progress into the Club World Cup round of 16 as Group C winners amid sweltering temperatures in the United States.

The match kicked off at 8pm Nigerian time ( 3pm local time in the USA) at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina with the temperature at 36C – and both sides were far from their best in the tough conditions.

The win means Portugal’s Benfica will play the Group D runners-up, which will be Chelsea, as long as Enzo Maresca’s side avoid defeat against Tunisian outfit ES Tunis in their match on Wednesday morning (2am).

Bayern had already qualified and boss Vincent Kompany made seven changes from the side that beat Argentina’s Boca Juniors 2-1 on Friday.
