Nairobi has formally submitted its bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, seeking to make the Kenyan capital the first African city to stage the sport’s flagship global event, Prime Business Africa reports.
The bid puts Nairobi in contention alongside London, Rome and Munich for the hosting rights.

The country is seeking to build on its experience of staging major international athletics events.
Kenya hosted the 2007 World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, while Nairobi staged the World Under-18 Championships in 2017 and the World Under-20 Championships in 2021.
Nairobi also hosted the African Athletics Championships in 2010, further strengthening Kenya’s record of hosting major track and field competitions.

If successful, Nairobi’s bid would bring the senior World Athletics Championships to Africa for the first time, marking a significant milestone for athletics on the continent.
World Athletics is expected to announce the host city for the 2029 championships in September.
