Back in 2019, live music experiences were just beginning to carve their space in the Nigerian entertainment landscape. Regular tickets for a Wizkid concert, for example, were a wallet-friendly 5,000 Naira. Fast forward to December 2022, and the dynamics have drastically transformed.

In December 2022, the likes of Asake, Wizkid, and Burna Boy were the kings of ‘Detty December’ concerts. However, the cost of witnessing these artist live has surged, with regular tickets now ranging between 30,000 to 75,000 Naira. This price increase prompts the question: what factors have propelled this upward trajectory in ticket prices?

One significant factor is the increase demand for live music experiences, especially during the festive season. ‘Detty December’ has evolved into a cultural phenomenon in Nigeria, with music lovers seeking unforgettable memories. Artists, recognizing this surge in demand, strategically schedule their concerts during this period, inevitably driving up the ticket prices to capitalize on the heightened interest.

The evolution of production standards has also played a pivotal role. Concertgoers today expect not just a musical performance but an unforgettable memory.

To meet these expectations, artists and organizers invest significantly in cutting-edge technology, top-tier venues, and extravagant stage setups. These enhancements, while elevating the concert experience, contribute substantially to the overall cost, there by impacting ticket prices.

Furthermore, the global recognition of Nigerian artists on the international stage has elevated their status and, subsequently, their performance fees. As musicians secure international collaborations and nominations, the prestige associated with their names commands a premium fee from fans eager to witness their stellar performances.

In the global scene, the likes of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé’s World summer tours, the live music market could very well see a surge in pricing.

The recent artist who offered fans high ticket prices is Bad Bunny, making the North American rounds with his “Most Wanted” tour. After presale ticketing opened on Oct. 25, fans took to TikTok to share their distaste with the pocket draining seats costing $150-$250.

Last year he surpassed Elton John with a tour gross of $393.3 million, the highest for an artist in 2022, boosted by his sold-out ventures, the early-year “El Último Tour Del Mundo” and, later, “World’s Hottest Tour.”

While the rising cost of concert tickets may raise eyebrows, it’s essential to recognize the efforts made by artists and event organizers to deliver an unforgettable experience.

As we gear up for ‘Detty December,’ understanding the factors influencing ticket prices sheds light on the complexities of organizing and enjoying live music during this festive season.
