1. Non-compliance With Electoral Act Invalidates Tinubu’s Election, Atiku Tells Tribunal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, in the 25th February election, Atiku Abubakar, has told the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja that the non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rendered invalid the election of Bola Tinubu as president-elect.

Atiku stated this in a petition he filed, alongside his party, PDP, challenging the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the 25th February 2023, presidential election. Read more

2. Labour Party’s Otti Wins Abia, As PDP’s Mbah Wins Enugu Election

The Labour Party Candidate in the 2023 Gubernatorial Election in Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, was on Wednesday evening declared winner of the polls by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Otti defeated the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state having scored the highest number of votes cast in the election.

On the other hand, the ruling PDP in Enugu State has retained power with its candidate, Barr Peter Mbah, emerging winner of the governorship poll after defeating his closest rival, the Labour Party’s candidate, Chijioke Edoga. Read more

3. Tinubu Jets Out To Rest, Perform Lesser Hajj – Rahman

Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has travelled abroad to rest and plan his transition programme ahead of the 29th May 2023 inauguration.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Office of President-elect which was signed by Tunde Rahman.

5. FEC Approves N459bn Contracts For Transportation Ministry, NDLEA Personnel’s Barracks

Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC), has approved contract awards worth about N459 billion for projects in the Ministry of Transportation as well as the construction of 192 flats for personnel of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The council gave approval for the contracts during its weekly meeting on Wednesday.

The contracts for the Transportation Ministry which was for the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) involved the construction and supply of customised Fire Service search and rescue vans for the extrication of accident victims at the cost of N510,934,600 and for the procurement of rollingstock operation and maintenance equipment for Kano-Maradi standard gauge rail line at the cost of $984,722,392.

 6. Lawan, Kalu, Oshiomhole, Umahi, Others Jostle For Senate President Seat

Ahead of the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in June, jostle for principal offices particularly the exalted position of Senate President has begun.

Former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu who is among those reelected to the senate in the just concluded election, has expressed his interest in becoming the Senate President in the 10th National Assembly

This is as the incumbent President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, and some other senators-elect, like Ebonyi State governor, Dave Umahi, Barau Jibrin, Godswill Akpabio, Abdul-Aziz Yari and, Adams Oshiomhole, are also apparently having their eyes on the number three citizen position.

There are expectations that the ruling All Progressives Congress would zone the office to the Southeast region, but political stakeholders from other geopolitical zones are equally campaigning for the office to be zoned to theirs.

 

7. PDP Accuses Abuja High Court Judge Of Bias, Seeks Transfer Of Cases To Other Courts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Justice Inyang Ekwo of bias in his handling of cases involving the party. It has consequently asked the Chief Judge to transfer all their cases to another judge.

8. Lawmakers Debate Bill To Grant, Revoke Licences for Cannabis Cultivation

Members of the House of Representatives begin debate on a bill seeking to amend the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, 2004 to confer additional responsibility of the power to grant and revoke licences for the cultivation of Cannabis (or any of its three species namely Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indicia and Cannabis Ruderalis) plant for medicinal purposes.

9. Naira Crisis: CBN Orders Banks To Immediately Collect Old Banknotes

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed commercial banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 they had previously deposited at its branches nationwide in order to further ease the scarcity of the currency across the country. Read more
