1. Nigeria Air Was Fraud, House of Reps Declare

The House of Representatives has picked holes in the activities relating to the purported launch of Nigeria Air on 26 May, 2023, spearheaded by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika.

According to the House members, the said launch of the airline as a national carrier which took place a few days to end of the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration was an attempt to deceive Nigerians, especially the Minister, who had promised that the Nigeria Air would begin operations before end of Buhari administration. 2. Senate Approves Tinubu’s Request for 20 Advisers

Nigerian Senate on Tuesday approved the request of President Bola Tinubu to appoint 20 Special Advisers.

Tinubu’s request was read on the floor of the senate by the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, who said that even though the names of the special adviser were not available, they would approve the request because of its urgency.

Tinubu recently announced the appointment of Femi Gbajabiamila, outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, as his Chief of Staff, and Senator George Akume, former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations as his secretary to the government of the federation (SGF).

3. Fuel Subsidy Strike:  Nigerians Accuse NLC, TUC Of Comprise

Nigerians have accused the organised labour of compromise following their resolutions to shelve the nationwide strike earlier planned to begin on Wednesday (today) in protest against the removal of fuel subsidy.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Monday had a meeting with representatives of the Federal Government and some resolutions on approaches to address concerns raised by the labour unions about the welfare of Nigerians who are at the receiving end of the effect of the petrol subsidy removal.

However, a cross-section of Nigerian workers have berated labour unions for suspending the strike after making Nigerians believe they were fighting for them.

5. Court Awards N20m Against Lawyer Over Suit on 25% FCT Votes

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, slammed against a legal practitioner, Mr Chuks Nwachukwu, who it ordered to pay a fine of N20 million for filing a suit it tagged “frivolous” to stop the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu on May 29.

The lawyer represented five residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, that applied for an order of the court to halt Tinubu’s swearing-in ceremony.

6. I’ve Paid N1.6m Yet to Receive Exhibits from INEC – Atiku

The Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate in the last election Abubakar Atiku have complained to the Presidential Election Petition Court that the Independent National Electoral Commission refused to provide them with some documents which they requested after paying over N1.6 million.

The party and Atiku made the complaint before the court on Tuesday during the hearing of their petitions challenging the emergence outcome of February 25 presidential election wherein Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress emerged as the winner.

7. Nigeria’s Economy to Grow by 2.8% in 2023 – W’Bank

The Nigerian economy is set to grow by 2.8 per cent in 2023, down from 3.3 per cent in 2022, the World Bank’s report reveals.

The bank’s Africa Pulse Report April 2023 edition titled ‘Leveraging resource wealth during the low carbon transition’ said the economic growth is expected to accelerate slightly to an average annual rate of 3 per cent in 2024–25.

The Senate has rejected the controversial National Water Resources Bill, 2023.

The bill was lined up for concurrence in the order paper but was rejected by the majority of the senators.

This brings an end to the controversy by governors and the federal lawmakers particularly those from the Southern part of the country.

9. Fuel Subsidy Removal : I would  Have Done It Differently – Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last presidential election, Peter Obi has indicated his support for the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) by the Tinubu administration, saying he had been against it since Goodluck Jonathan’s era.

According to him, fuel subsidy scheme is an organised crime where people steal the nation’s resources, adding that Nigerians do not consume the quantity of fuel reported. He averred that he would have done it differently from what Tinubu did by first taking steps to provide palliatives and cushion the effect of the subsidy removal on the masses.

10. Subsidy Removal: Why We Suspended Strike – NLC

 The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has explained that it suspended the planned nationwide strike because it realized the willingness of the federal government for continuous engagement and to offer reasonable palliatives in due course to cushion the effect of the removal of subsidy on petrol.

The Congress said it also considered the mood of the socio-political landscape in the last elections and the need to pursue national stability before deciding to shelve its planned nationwide strike over fuel subsidy removal.

In a communique issued at the end of an emergency National Executive Council (NEC), the union said it also took into account the court injunction restraining the Congress from proceeding with the proposed nationwide strike.
