President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate global technology companies, including Meta, Alphabet’s Google, X and certain generative artificial intelligence platforms over alleged anti-competitive practices and the unlawful use of Nigerian news content, Prime Business Africa reports.

The directive followed a formal petition by the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), an umbrella body representing major media stakeholders, including the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria and Guild of Corporate Online Publishers.

The probe is expected to determine whether the companies’ operations violate provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 or any other applicable laws governing competition and consumer protection in Nigeria.

The Presidency said the investigation would be conducted independently, transparently and on the basis of verifiable evidence, stressing that all parties would be given a fair hearing and that no findings of wrongdoing had been reached.

FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, said the commission remained committed to a fair and balanced process that would protect competition while fostering innovation.

According to Bello, the inquiry is aimed at striking a balance between technological advancement and the sustainability of Nigeria’s media ecosystem, amid growing concerns that global digital platforms benefit commercially from locally produced news content without providing adequate compensation to publishers.

The investigation places Nigeria alongside a growing number of countries seeking to redefine the relationship between technology companies and news publishers as artificial intelligence, search engines and social media platforms increasingly rely on journalistic content to power their services.

A similar dispute was recorded in South Africa, where Google agreed to pay local news organisations about $40 million annually for several years following complaints over the use of their content.

The outcome of the FCCPC investigation could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s digital economy and media industry, potentially shaping future rules on how global technology firms access, distribute and monetise locally produced news content, while determining whether publishers are entitled to compensation for the commercial use of their journalism.
