President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, shifting his retirement timeline to February 2027, Prime Business Africa reports.
A statement issued on Friday by the Presidency said Adeniyi’s first tenure extension was due to expire on August 1, 2026, before the latest approval was granted to allow him complete key reforms currently underway in the service.

According to the statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the extension is aimed at ensuring the full consolidation of the National Single Window project and facilitating an orderly succession process within the Customs Service.
During the extended period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, as well as enforce the retirement of officers who have reached the mandatory retirement threshold of 60 years of age or 35 years of service.

Adeniyi, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, joined the Customs Service in the late 1980s and rose through the ranks over three decades. He was appointed Comptroller-General in June 2023 by President Tinubu after serving in several senior capacities, including Deputy Comptroller, Comptroller, Assistant Comptroller-General, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General.
The extension effectively positions him to continue steering ongoing structural and digital reforms in the Customs Service, particularly the government’s trade facilitation drive anchored on the National Single Window initiative.
