Kamsiyochukwu MbamaluSerena Williams did it again! On August 22nd 2023, the veteran tennis player, took to her social media to celebrate the birth of her second child, Adira. The name was revealed by the husband of the player, Mr Alexis Ohanian through his Instagram where he displayed his family of four. Alexis is also the co-founder and an ex-executive chairman of the social media platform, Reddit.
Aside from being a tech entrepreneur, Alexis is also the author of the best-selling “Without Their Permission: How The 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed”, a book he published in 2013. As an investor, Alexis has investments in over 200 start-ups in the United States and his marriage to Serena is seen as powerful arrangement as together they make a pretty good team.

In the tennis world, Serena and her older sister, Venus Williams, had taken a vehement lead. However, Last year in September 2022, Serena Williams finalised her retirement from the world of lawn tennis she had known since 1995 to focus on her family after she lost the U.S open match..
Despite her sudden retirement, Serena Williams is seen as a legend with 23 grand slams, three double gold medals in the Olympics and 14 grand slam double titles alongside her sister, Venus. Serena Williams decision to leave the world of lawn tennis and focus on her family is seen as a well-thought-out move, considering that she had earlier given a hint on her Instagram handle and during an interview with Vogue a month before her retirement. She had said she was “evolving away from tennis.”
Serena was well known for her Spartan lifestyle and emphasis on family: Before her retirement, her husband and first daughter, Olympia, would always be by her side at all her games. In an interview with an online magazine, the lawn tennis star mentioned how her dad left that impact of the meaning of family, an experience for which she is eternally grateful.
“The reason I’ve had the career I have is because of my dad. He’s been super important and a staple in my life, and even in how I’m raising my daughter, I can remember my dad doing that. So those are things that I’m still learning from him,” Serena said in an interview with the “Human Resources Online.”
Commenting on what he described as Serena’s “Spartan lifestyle,” Senior journalist and Sports Editor at The Guardian, Mr Christian Okpara, told Prime Business Africa that although Lawn Tennis had been the only thing Serena knew all her life, family still “tops it” for the player.
“Despite her Spartan lifestyle, family has been of importance to Serena.” Mr Okpara who has covered many international sports events, including lawn tennis, in his over 30 years of journalism experience, told PBA correspondent on Wednesday August 23, 2023.
Okpara believes that, with her second child’s arrival, Serena’s goal of building a formidable family with her husband would be a huge success.
