Senate Begins Clause-by-Clause Voting on State Police Constitutional Amendment

June 24, 2026

The Senate on Wednesday commenced clause-by-clause voting on proposed constitutional amendments seeking to establish state police, marking a significant milestone in the National Assembly’s consideration of one of Nigeria’s most consequential security reforms, Prime Business Africa reports.

The manual voting process requires senators to vote individually on each provision of the bill, which aims to decentralise policing and empower states to establish and operate their own police forces alongside the Nigeria Police Force.
