Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, has been released by the Nigeria Police. This was confirmed in a viral video on Thursday morning.

Also, LP national spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, confirmed that the embattled national chairman, who was arrested by policemen in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Wednesday afternoon, was released Thursday morning.

Mr Abure was arrested following a petition by a former National Youth Leader of the party, Anslem Eragbe, to the Edo State Commissioner of Police.

He was accused of being involved in the attack on Eragbe in December 2023.

The police had said Abure was arrested for attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, and related offences.

“Julius Abure is in his hotel room here in Benin City,” Ifoh said on Channels Television’s programme, The Morning Brief on Thursday morning.

Viral videos showed Abure being manhandled by policemen, as LP supporters struggled to prevent his arrest.

Speaking after his release as indicated in the video, Abure said he and others arrested alongside him, suffered injustice and persecution just like other freedom fighters around the world.

“No struggle to liberate to liberate a country comes easy. In many countries of the world where freedom fighters have fought for the emancipation of the people, freedom fighters suffer injustice, and persecution and it is what is happening to me and my other colleagues since after the general election. After the general election, they tried to instigate criss in the party, and try to bring false accusations against us.  They have also come to talk about forgery at a time when it didn’t work, they came with embezzlement. Any person that is aggrieved within the party, they go and instigate them to write a petition and make trouble, and the irony is that even the police at the end of the day, will discover that those things were lies,” Abure said.

He said the arrest occurred when they making arrangements for LP primaries in Edo when the police came and arrested him.

He added that following various interventions, police released him on bail.

He thanked LP members for the solidarity and support given to him and others arrested alongside him.
