The Nigerian Air Force has taken delivery of five new helicopters as the government expands its air fleet, the service said on Tuesday.

The delivery comprises three AW-109 Trekker B helicopters manufactured by Italy’s Leonardo Helicopters and two H-125 helicopters produced by Airbus Helicopters.

The three AW-109s are part of a 10-helicopter acquisition by the Federal Government. They arrived in Lagos on Sept. 15, with the remaining seven expected before the end of 2026. The two H-125s were delivered earlier, the Air Force said.
Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke said the new helicopters would increase the availability and flexibility of the Air Force’s rotary-wing fleet.
The AW-109s are designed for missions including intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, close air support, armed escort and combat search and rescue, while the H-125s provide light-helicopter capability for a range of military requirements, the service said.

The helicopters are undergoing post-delivery assembly, technical checks and crew-readiness procedures before induction and operational deployment.
The acquisition is part of broader government efforts to re-equip the Nigerian military amid continuing security challenges across the country.
