Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has approved the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the country’s Contingency Fund to support emergency relief and long-term flood mitigation efforts following devastating floods that hit Accra and other parts of southern Ghana, Prime Business Africa reports.

The directive followed torrential rainfall on June 29, which triggered widespread flooding, claiming lives, displacing residents and causing extensive damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure across several communities.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the Minister for Finance has been directed to release the funds immediately. Of the total amount, GH¢150 million has been earmarked for emergency relief operations to support flood victims and affected communities, while the remaining GH¢150 million will be used to finance flood mitigation projects aimed at reducing the impact of future disasters.

As part of the government’s emergency response, Mahama also directed the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to work alongside the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency agencies in ongoing rescue and relief operations.
