Ghana Receives $35 Million Dividend from Perseus Mining

September 1, 2026

Ghana has received a $35 million dividend from Perseus Mining Ghana Ltd, seven times the amount paid to the state last year, as the government seeks to increase its returns from the country’s mineral resources, Prime Business Africa reports.

The dividend, equivalent to about 391.2 million Ghanaian cedis, represents the government’s 10% interest in the mining company, the Ministry of Finance said.

Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson said the payment demonstrated the benefits of collaboration between the government and investors and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to securing a fair share of the value generated from Ghana’s mineral resources while maintaining a stable and predictable environment for responsible investment.

“That is why we introduced the sliding-scale system: when mining companies earn more, the people of Ghana must benefit more,” Forson said.

Perseus Mining Ghana Board Chairman Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI attributed the increase in the dividend to the company’s strong performance, prudent resource management and partnership with the government.

The latest payment compares with the $5 million dividend paid to the government last year.

As of June 30, Perseus had paid about 1.7 billion cedis in royalties, 4.2 billion cedis in corporate income tax and the Growth and Sustainability Levy, and 1.96 billion cedis in PAYE and other statutory taxes, according to the Finance Ministry.

The company also supports education, healthcare, infrastructure, skills training and local enterprise development in communities around its operations.

Perseus operates the Edikan gold mine in Ghana and gold mines in Côte d’Ivoire. The company produced 404,998 ounces of gold in the financial year ended June 30, 2026 and reported notional cash flow of $769 million.

The higher dividend comes as Ghana seeks to increase public revenues from its gold industry amid strong bullion prices. The government has been pursuing changes to the mining fiscal regime intended to ensure that the state captures a greater share of gains when mining profitability increases.

The dividend payment is distinct from royalties, corporate taxes and other statutory levies paid by the company and from the government’s broader sliding-scale fiscal arrangements.
