Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus scored twice to help Ghana beat South Korea 3-2 in a World Cup Group H thriller at a rocking Education City Stadium on Monday afternoon keeping the Black Stars in contention for a place in the last 16.

The Ghanaians were beaten 3-2 by Portugal in their first group game and needed a win desperately if they are to remain in the tournament.

South Korea came roaring back, however, with two daring Cho Gue-sung headers three minutes apart to level the seesaw match.

Kudus grabbed the winner in the 68th minute when he was left unmarked in the penalty area and slotted home past a diving Kim Seung-gyu.

Ghana, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament at 61st, joined Portugal at the top of the group standings on three points with Uruguay and South Korea on one. Portugal and Uruguay play later on Monday.

Former England international Clinton Morrison while speaking on the BBC World Service in the game noted that Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew was the player who made the difference in the win over Serbia.

“Everything went through him in the game. He ran the show. I am really impressed by the quality of the game we just finished watching.”

Ghana will play Uruguay on Friday in their final group game.

The match is a repeat if the quarterfinals clash of the 2010 fifa World Cup where Luis Suarez denied a goal bound shot with his hand before Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan fired his penalty over the bar to deny the Black Stars a place in the semifinals of the tournament.

Ghana qualified for the 2022 World Cup at the expense of Nigeria on the away goals rule after a goalless draw on Kumasi and a 1-1  draw in Abuja back in March 2022.

The Ghanaians were absent at the last World Cup in Russia four years ago.
