The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has cautioned petroleum marketers against unfair pricing practices, warning that it will sanction operators found engaging in profiteering amid shifting dynamics in the downstream oil market, Prime Business Africa reports.
The warning comes against the backdrop of recent volatility in global crude oil prices, which initially triggered sharp increases in domestic fuel costs. Between April and May, petrol prices surged to between ₦1,350 and ₦1,500 per litre across several parts of the country, while diesel sold for as high as ₦2,000 per litre during heightened geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region.
Although crude prices have since eased following a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the FCCPC noted that retail fuel prices have remained relatively elevated. Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) currently averages about ₦1,200 per litre nationwide, even as some local refiners have reduced gantry prices to between ₦1,025 and ₦1,075.

The Commission stressed that while Nigeria operates a deregulated downstream petroleum market, deregulation does not exempt operators from fair competition rules or consumer protection obligations.
Speaking on the development, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, said the Commission’s mandate is to ensure competitive markets function properly and that consumers are not subjected to exploitative or anti-competitive pricing practices.
“Market liberalisation does not diminish businesses’ obligations to compete fairly or consumers’ right to fair treatment,” Bello said. “Where credible evidence indicates conduct that undermines competition or exploits consumers, the Commission will take appropriate enforcement action.”
He noted that while marketers typically adjust prices quickly upward in response to rising crude costs, the downward adjustment has been comparatively slow, raising concerns about inefficient transmission of cost savings to consumers.

The Commission urged consumers to report suspected unfair pricing, misleading practices, and other anti-competitive behaviour through its established complaint channels, as it intensifies surveillance across the petroleum value chain.
