Given that Aba is the commercial city of Abia State and an economic hub in southeast, sustainable power supply is no doubt an indispensable amenity.

Chief Executive Officer and founder of Geometric Power, Prof. Bart Nnaji in an exclusive interview with Prime Business Africa in Enugu revealed lofty plans the company has made towards providing sufficient power supply in the Aba area.

The Aba ring-fence, also called Aba Integrated Power Project (AIPP), has according to the CEO, an installed capacity of 141 megawatts, coupled with other infrastructural facilities put in place by the company to ensure sufficient power supply when they commence full operations.

“Our company has over the years, prepared for the ability to supply reliable electricity. We have embedded generation power of 141 megawatts in Aba. We have also invested heavily in the distribution infrastructure,” Nnaji stated.

Speaking further on the company’s investment in power infrastructure, Nnaji said, they met only three substations (2 by 15 MVA) which can only allow for not more than 70 megawatts to pass through, but went ahead and built additional four brand-new substations – 2 by 15 MVA each.

“That means that the entire Aba now has transmission capacity that will be able to deal with whatever power that will be required in the next few years. So, we have prepared that with the substations built. We also built new sub-transmission lines, that is, distribution lines – 33 KV and 11 KV built.

“We have invested heavily in distribution infrastructure. We have also built new gas pipeline to ensure that we have direct supply from the gas production facility of Shell to the power plant to ensure availability of fuel. So, we have commercially reliable gas supply agreement. These are some of the things we have done,” Nnaji added.

The power project is an integration of both generation and distribution services which according to Nnaji, makes it different from other distribution companies.

Consumer Households In Aba To Get Prepaid Metres

To avert the controversy that often arises between customers and power distribution companies as a result of improper billing, the indigenous energy solution provider, Geometric Power, also has plans to aggressively meter all parts of Aba under the Ring-fence Area.

Inadequate metering of electricity consumer households has been a source of constant misunderstanding between customers and distribution companies in different parts of Nigeria due to indiscriminate charges offered through estimate billing.

Prepaid meters

The Geometric Power CEO, a former minister of Power, said the company has plans on ground to embark on aggressive metering of consumers using prepaid metres for equitable billing.

This he said will not only ensure adequate coverage of customers but also reduce revenue leakages through the distribution channels.

“We are going to aggressively metre all eligible consumers. As a matter of fact, it is going to be prepaid not postpaid. Our goal is to metre everyone, and we are going to start by aggressively doing it. In the first year of operation, the amount of metres we would supply, would be more than what you find in the distribution companies,” the former minister of power stated.
